How the selling price is worked out

If you price by markup, you add a percentage of the cost price on top of the cost price.

If you price by margin, you choose what share of the selling price should be profit, and the cost price makes up the rest.

  • By markup: Selling price = Cost price × (1 + Markup % ÷ 100)
  • By margin: Selling price = Cost price ÷ (1 − Margin % ÷ 100)

Example: a bottle of body lotion

  1. The lotion costs you ₦3,000.
  2. With a 40% markup, you sell it for ₦3,000 × 1.4 = ₦4,200.
  3. With a 40% margin, you sell it for ₦3,000 ÷ 0.6 = ₦5,000.

Selling Price Calculator: common questions

Should I price by markup or by margin?
Either works, as long as you are consistent. Many shop owners think in markup because it starts from the cost price. Margin is useful when you want to know what share of each sale is profit.
How do I round my prices?
Round up to a price that is easy to collect in cash and easy for customers to remember, such as the nearest ₦50 or ₦100.
What if my supplier's price changes often?
Recalculate when it changes. In SaleTick you update the cost price on the product and your profit reports use the new figure from then on.
