How break-even is worked out

Your fixed costs are the bills you pay whether you sell or not: rent, salaries, electricity, fuel for the generator, data and levies.

Every sale contributes its profit margin towards those costs. Break-even is the level of sales where that contribution exactly pays them.

  • Break-even sales = Monthly fixed costs ÷ (Average margin % ÷ 100)
  • Daily target = Break-even sales ÷ Trading days per month

Example: a provision store

  1. Rent, salaries, power and other costs come to ₦450,000 a month.
  2. Your average margin across products is 15%.
  3. Break-even sales = ₦450,000 ÷ 0.15 = ₦3,000,000 a month.
  4. Open 26 days a month, that is about ₦115,385 in sales a day.

Break-Even Calculator: common questions

What counts as a fixed cost?
Anything you pay each month regardless of sales: rent, staff salaries, electricity, generator fuel, internet, security and levies. The cost of the goods you sell is not a fixed cost.
How do I find my average margin?
Use the profit margin calculator on a few of your best sellers and take a rough average, or let SaleTick calculate your actual profit from real sales.
What if I am below break-even?
You can raise prices on items with thin margins, cut a fixed cost, or push products with higher margins. Watching daily sales against your target shows early whether a change is working.
