How the reorder point is worked out

You need enough stock to keep selling while you wait for the new delivery, plus a few days of extra stock in case sales jump or the supplier is late.

When stock falls to the reorder point, place your order. The order quantity is how much you need to cover the days until your next order.

  • Reorder point = Daily sales × (Delivery days + Safety days)
  • Order quantity = Daily sales × Days the order should last

Example: a fast-selling drink

  1. You sell 12 bottles a day, and your supplier delivers in 3 days.
  2. You keep 2 extra days of stock for safety.
  3. Reorder point = 12 × (3 + 2) = 60 bottles.
  4. To last two weeks, order 12 × 14 = 168 bottles.

Reorder Point Calculator: common questions

What is safety stock?
Extra stock kept to cover unexpected demand or a late delivery. Two to three days of sales is a common starting point for small shops.
How do I know my daily sales for a product?
Add up how many you sold over the last two to four weeks and divide by the number of days you were open. SaleTick's sales reports give you this without counting.
Should every product have the same reorder point?
No. Fast sellers and products with slow suppliers need higher reorder points. Work it out for your best sellers first.
